Are You A Gift Idea Moron?

Coming up with a great gift idea is an art. One that I personally have no natural talent for. You have to be creative, thoughtful, and someone who plans ahead.

Before we get too far along, let me give you a great example of what a gift idea moron I really was. You won't believe this.

About 25 years ago, shortly after I got married, I was determined to give my wife some great Christmas gifts. I bought her favorite perfume. But that wasn't enough for me. Here was my gift idea. I was going to get her as many gifts as I could afford. Hey, quantity had to count for something right. So there, underneath the Christmas tree, was this nicely wrapped fairly large box.

I could see the anticipation in my wife's eyes as she tore away the paper. And there, inside, was a nice, shiny, brand new, sparkling........pressure cooker. See I told you I was a gift idea moron.

She's been beating me over the head (not literally thankfully) with that pressure cooker for the past 25 years. Geez women have long memories when they want. Amazingly, this wonderful (yet thoroughly disgusted at the time) woman remains married to me. Why, I have no idea.

In the years that passed she's accused me of always running out at the last minute, and never putting any thought into the gifts I buy. And after some brief soul searching (about 1.5 seconds) I realized she was at least partially right. I often did run out at the last minute and buy the first thing I saw. Not because I didn't put any thought into it. Rather it was because I had no clue as to how to come up with a great gift idea.

I'll lie down on the couch for this next part Dr. Freud. It all started early in my early childhood. You see, whenever I wanted to give a gift, I would whip up a quick picture, put "I love you" on it somewhere and give it to my mom. She appreciated it and was so wowed by it that it typically remained up on the refrigerator for a whole year. I'm not sure but I think some of those pictures may still be there.

Anyway, the lesson I quickly learned was that whenever I wanted to give a great gift, all I had to do was throw something together and give it. Of course they would like it. It was from me! Who wouldn't like it? Again, I tell you it was from me. It was great! The best gift idea ever!

The sad thing is I never realized that that wasn't the case until I got married. I know I sound like an idiot here, but until I got married, giving gifts and coming up with gift ideas was never high on my priority list.
