How To Shop For Gifts For Children

You would think that finding gifts for children would be the easiest shopping on your list. After all, kids have a lot of interests and there's so much available that finding the perfect present would be a snap. Well it doesn't always work that way.

When it comes to finding gifts for children, you definitely have a lot of choices. The amount of stuff in the stores can be overwhelming, and your children probably tell you they want everything. You may also be faced with multiple relatives who are asking you what they should get your child for either their birthday or for Christmas. When this happens, you have to be prepared or your child may end up with repeated gifts, or a bunch of stuff that drives you nuts.

First, you should find out what your child wants. That's the easy part. They're not shy about telling you. Make up a list of the things they really want, and then add the things you may think they need.

As a side note, when I was a small boy it was always somewhat disappointing to get a new sweater or some other form of clothing. Admittedly I was a spoiled child, but I would get clothes throughout the year. Getting a new pair of pants as a gift seemed like nothing special. I always wanted toys. Perhaps your child feels the same way. Keep this in mind when adding the things kids need to the list.

When it comes to gifts for children, you and your kids will have different ideas about what makes a good gift. Narrow the list down so that there are plenty of toys and other fun things, but it's also OK to include some items like clothes, movies and the other things they may want, but don’t make a priority. Remember, moderation is the key here.

You should then decide which of the gifts for children you want to get for them yourself, and then give the rest of the list to relatives. Give each relative a few different ideas so there are not repeated toys and other items. Tell them which toys you think your child will want the most, but also suggest that clothes, books, and other practical items are also a good idea. This is a great idea if you have a family like mine. They always go overboard buying for my children. We could open a toy store with the amount of stuff she gets. It makes life around here very difficult around the holidays.

Of course remembering my own childhood, I always select a toy off the list. I bet that's why I'm the favorite uncle come Christmas or birthdays.

When you are looking for gifts for children, make sure you shop early. There are many times when a toy becomes popular, and you can’t find what you are looking for if you wait until the day before Christmas. This had happened to me more than once.

One year my now oldest daughter really wanted a PJ Sparkles. We drove to every toy store within a 100 miles radius. We left our name and phone number with every store manager so they could call us when one came in. Of course we only started doing this a week before Christmas. We finally ended up with a generic imitation. Although my daughter didn't show it, we could tell she was a bit disappointed. We ended up getting her the real thing about a week after Christmas. Naturally she played with it about a week before it went into the toy box for good.

There is also the problem of hard to find gifts for children. My other daughter was Wiggles crazy on her third Christmas, and there was nothing else she was interested in. Wiggles toys and clothing were scarce around me, so I am glad I started shopping early. I had to get most of her Christmas that year online, but that was OK. She at least had what she wanted, and I was able to find some great deals on gifts for children by shopping on eBay.

One other point, when shopping for gifts for children it's best to tell the child's parents what you've purchased off the list as soon as you get it. It just makes it easier for them if they give lists to other relatives. And again, it helps cut down on duplicate gifts.
